Abstract

1,149,324. Sanitary napkins. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 26 April, 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 19276/67. Heading A5R. A sanitary napkin comprises a preformed unitary absorptive core 11 the upper and lower surfaces of said core being arcuately preformed and being upwardly concave in both the direction of the length of the core and transverse thereto, and having a central longitudinal depression 16 in the upper surface of the core. The upwardly concave configuration in a lateral direction may be imperceptible. The longitudinal depression comprises a single longitudinal groove, a pair of longitudinal grooves or short aligned grooves and is spaced from the ends of the pad. The pad is faced on the lower surface and edges by a moisture impermeable polyethylene film 12 and is wrapped in a rayon, cotton or synthetic fibre fleece 13 and an outer gauze or knitted scrim cover 14 which forms end tabs 14a, 14b. A number of cores 11 are formed by cutting transversely an elongated bat (23, Fig. 6) of uniform concave-convex cross-section. The bat is formed in a mould (21, Fig. 4) from wood fibres, cotton linters or rayon flock, which is mixed with a foaming agent and dried after moulding leaving the fibres in the distended condition produced by the foam bubbles. Alternatively, the bat is formed from bonded air-laid felt. The central groove or grooves are formed by a rib (28, Fig. 7) on the male portion of a two part mould in which the core is subjected to pressure.
