932,939. Surgical dressings. KIMBERLYCLARK CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1959 [Aug. 28, 1958], No. 29067/59. Class 81 (2). A bandage or sanitary napkin comprises an absorbent pad including a fluid-repellent sheet of creped tissue impregnated with thermoplastic material portions of the pad adjacent the sheet having thermoplastic material dispersed within them in amounts which diminish away from the sheet. A sanitary napkin comprises a baffle 15 located between absorbent layers 13, 14 or on one side of a single absorbent layer, a gauze wrapper being provided. The baffle may be perforated and is impregnated with petroleum wax. After placing between or against the absorbent layers, the article so formed is heated to 200- 250‹ F. for a period e.g. 20-30 minutes. The wax melts and spreads into the adjacent fibres of the absorbent layers. The baffle promotes lateral dispersion of fluid in the napkin. The petroleum wax is present in the baffle sheet in an amount between 1 and 16% of the baffle sheet. The baffle sheet is disposed midway through the thickness of the pad or between a single absorbent layer and several sheets of creped tissue. The absorbent layers are made of comminuted wood pulp (fluff), rayon, cotton or synthetic fibres or creped tissue paper.
