Abstract
820,615. Rectifying. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO. Ltd. May 24, 1956 [May 24, 1955], No. 141177/.55. Class 38 (2). When current through a germanium or silicon rectifier ceases to pass in the forward direction and the applied potential reverses, the rectifier passes a short pulse of current in the reverse direction. The effect of the inductance of the external circuit is to produce a transient inverse voltage across the rectifier as the pulse current falls to zero. To prevent the deleterious effect of this on the life of the rectifier it may be shunted by a capacitor C<SP>1</SP> 1 or non linear resistor which presents a low impedance to the voltage pulse, but a high value to the normal potential during the forward half-cycle. If the rectifiers are in bridge arrangement the capacitors C 1 may be connected across the rectifiers taken in pairs, on their A.C. sides.
