To protect silicon or germanium rectifiers 7 in a bridge circuit against overloading due to carrier storage when the potential is reversed, condensers 16, which may have resistors in series, are connected across the rectifiers connected to the positive output lead but not across those connected to the negative output lead, or vice versa. Each rectifier may be replaced by a series; parallel or series-parallel combination of rectifiers. Other circuit elements may be used in place of or in addition to the condensers. The capacitance of the condenser in parallel with a rectifier is preferably one order of magnitude greater than the total capacitance in parallel with the rectifier at the instant when it becomes non-conducting.
