Abstract

818,718. Thermal regenerators. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 1, 1957 [July 2, 1956], No. 20387/56. Class 64(1) In a thermal regenerator, a seal provided to prevent leakage from one fluid stream to the other at the end face of a rotary matrix 3 comprises conical rollers 5 held in contact with the matrix face and with an opposed surface rotatable in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the matrix and which may comprise a refractory member 6 (Fig. 1) or the end face of an adjacent matrix (Fig. 4). The sealing rollers, which may be of a refractory material, are preferably mounted at the hotter end of the matrix, conventional seals 8 being provided at the colder end. Two pairs of rollers may be mounted as shown in Fig. 5 to provide a "dead" zone separating the heat exchanging fluid zones 9, 10 whereby the matrix passages may be purged in passing from one heat exchanging fluid zone to the other. The heat transfer material of the matrix may be refractory at the hotter end and more highly heat conductive at the cooler end. Tubing or rods of refractory material and spaced, metallic or ceramic baffles the spaces between which are filled with lumps of refractory material are mentioned as suitable forms of heat transfer material which is separated from the outer casing 1 and from the driving shaft 2 by heat insulating material 4.
