Abstract
704,857. Rotary regenerative heat-exchangers. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., C. A., and KOLB, P. April 20, 1951 [May 3, 1950], No. 10967/50. Class 64(1) A sealing arrangement for a rotarymatrix type regenerative heat-exchanger comprises an annular chamber formed by cylindrical and radial walls of the stationary casing structure and the end wall of the rotor, sealing rings n, o being simultaneously pressed against two opposed walls of the casing and the end wall of the rotor by springs r pressing indirectly on the rings and either directly or indirectly upon the walls of the casing. The invention is applicable to apparatus incorporating either drum type rotors as shown and also as described in Specification 655,313, or disc type rotors. In the apparatus shown having a drum type rotor, the annular chamber i is formed by walls j, k, l of the casing and end wall m of the rotor, the springs r being located respectively between a sleeve s<SP>1</SP> and the inner race s of the rotor bearing t and other rings p, q bearing on the sealing rings n, o. The annular chamber i may be placed in communication with a low temperature, high pressure air space of the regenerator, e.g. by means of a pipe u, and the consequent flow of high pressure air through the space i cools the bearing and assists in applying a sealing pressure, thereby relieving the springs r of some of their loading.
