Class 64(1) In a thermal regenerator in which a disc type rotor 10 rotates in a stationary casing 12 provided with inlet and outlet openings for each of two heat exchanging fluids, peripheral and diametral seals are provided between the rotor end faces and the casing and the sealing pressure is maintained by a cushion 72 of heat resistant, resilient, spongy material such as a silicone material, which urges a carbon sealing member 68 (see Fig. 5) into sealing contact with the upper end face of the rotor. The rotor, which is supported on a lower flange 60 of the housing through an annular packing 66 and a further carbon sealing member 68, comprises two wheellike end members (see Fig. 3), spaced apart by a sleeve 38 and each consisting of a hub 32, rim 34 and spokes 36. Sectorshaped baskets of heat transfer material 42 are disposed around the member 38 between the spokes 36 of the rotor end members. Resilient packing 48 permits of differential expansion between the various parts of the rotor. An outer shell extends between the rims of the wheellike rotor end members and comprises a metallic strip secured to each rim and having lateral slots therein extending from opposite edges alternately (Fig. 4, not shown).
