Abstract

1,063,984. Mechanical seals; pipe Joints. SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER A.B. Aug. 20, 1963 [Aug. 20, 1962], No. 32857/63. Headings F2B and F2G. [Also in Division F4] The seal 15, Fig. 1, for a rotary heat-exchanger comprises a sealing ring 18, Fig. 2, which is carried by a yielding sleeve 20 and pressed against, or held at a small distance from, a counter sealing ring 17, and means 21, 22 for relieving the sleeve of peripherally-directed forces. The ring 18, which may be made in one or more parts and formed with grooves on its sealin face is prevented from turning relative to the flange 19 by bolts 21 which are slidablymounted in tubes 22, a clearance being provided around the bolts to permit radial as well as axial movement. As shown, flue gases are directed through a heat-retaining stator 1 via ducts 2, 3 while combustion air is directed through the stator via stationary ducts 4, 7 and rotary interconnecting-ducts 5, 6 which are secured to gear rings 11, 12 driven through gears 8, 9 by a motor 10. The sleeve may be made of asbestos strips, metal cloth or interconnecting spring plates; guide plates 23 prevent damage to the cloth on flexing. The sealing rings, which may be made of sintered materials, are urged towards each other by virtue of their own weight; springs may be employed if the heat exchanger is arranged horizontally. If contact-free sealing is preferred to sliding friction, the sealing ring may be held away from the counter sealing ring by levers and be guided in accordance with the warping; spring or fluid pressures may be used to guide the sealing rings. Instead of bolts 21, projections and notches may be employed. The seal 16 between the rotary duct 6 and stationary duct 7 is similar to seal 15 except that the flexibly-mounted ring 18 rotates and the ring 17 is stationary.
