Abstract

1307365 Thermal regenerators LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd 11 June 1970 [11 June 1969] 29487/69 Heading F4K In a rotary matrix type thermal regenerator in which seals 12, 13 respectively encircle outlet and inlet areas 16, 17 of the matrix end faces for one of the fluids (e.g. turbine exhaust gas), the outlet area encircled by the seal 12 is smaller than the inlet area encircled by the seal 13; the whole of the matrix area outside the areas 16, 17 is subject to the pressure of the other fluid (e.g. compressed air) and the matrix surface area surrounding the area enclosed by the outlet seal 12 is larger than the matrix surface area surrounding the area enclosed by the inlet seal 13; arrangement being such that the reresultant thrust on the matrix due to the inlet and outlet pressures of said one fluid, and the said differences in areas enclosed by the seals is substantially balanced by an opposite resultant thrust on the matrix due to said other fluid pressure and said difference in the areas of the matrix surrounding the areas enclosed by the seals.
