Abstract
975,776. Thermal regenerators. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. July 25, 1963 [Aug. 31, 1961], No. 33563/62. Heading F4K. A rotary regenerative heat exchanger comprises a rotor of heat absorbing material 1 on the outer periphery of which is mounted a geared ring 6; the ring and the rotor having corresponding curved recesses 9, 10 in their mating surfaces, with rolling members 11 being disposed in said recesses, which transmit the drive from the geared ring to the rotor. In the form shown the geared ring 6 is held in position by means of annular clamping plates 7 held together by bolts 8, which pass through the recesses, and on which are mounted the rolling members 11. The rotor is driven by a gearwheel 14, on a fixed axis of rotation by means of further gear-wheels 12a, 12b whose axes of rotation are movable in an arcuate path to accommodate expansion of the geared ring 6: contact, between the wheels 12a, 12b and the ring 6 and wheel 14 being maintained by means of tensioning springs. If the ring 6 expands relative to the rotor, the ring moves in a circumferential direction relative to the said rotor,. until the drive is taken up again through the rolling members 11. The rotor comprises an annular glass-ceramic matrix, bounded on its outer and inner peripheries by solid rings 2, 3 and the central space 4 thus formed being closed by discs 5.
