Abstract
1,206,246. Thermal regenerators. LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd. 20 Aug., 1969 [17 Sept., 1968], No. 44119/68. Heading F4K. In a rotary thermal regulator comprising a ceramic disc-like matrix 1 coaxially surrounded by a metal driving annulus 4 having a ring of teeth 9 meshing with three circumferentially spaced pinions 12 (13, Fig. 3, 14, Fig. 4), mounted respectively on shafts 15 (16, 17), each shaft carries a freely rotatable roller 18 (19, 20), which engages a circumferentially extending rib 10 provided on the outer peripheral face of the driving annulus 4. This arrangement serves (a) to accommodate axial loading on the rotor for example due to resilient seals 26, 27, 28 and (b) to restrain the rotor from tipping. The matrix 1 is drivingly engaged with the annulus 4 by means of a radially resilient drive transmitting member 5, e.g. a spirally wound strip or a corrugated spring strip. The annulus 4 is held against axial movement relative to the matrix 1 by means of a pin 6 engaged between a flange 7 and a clamping plate 8. Only one of the shafts viz. shaft 15 is a drive shaft, the other shafts (16, 17) being idler shafts. One of these idler shafts (17, Fig. 4) is mounted in bearings on a swing or in (24) connected to a torsion bar (25); this permits the rotor to be centralized about a central bolt 2. In an alternative arrangement (not shown) the rib is replaced by a circumferential groove and the rollers are convexly shaped to fit into the groove.
