Abstract

1334481 Thermal regenerators LE MOTEUR MODERNE 9 Feb 1972 [15 Feb 1971] 6161/72 Heading F4K In a rotary regenerative heat exchanger for exchanging heat between hot and cold gas flows and comprising a rotary matrix 4 of refractory material, the periphery of the matrix 4 is compressed uniformly by an elastic collar 10 made up of three overlapping arcuate bands (10a, 10b, 10c) connected together by three elastic tension members 12. A heat insulating band 11 is interposed between the matrix 4 and the collar 10. Each tension member 12 is made up of two stirrups 12a, 12b abutting against respective hooks 13b, 13a at the overlapping ends of two neighbouring bands 10b, 10a. The stirrups 12a, 12b are subjected to a force tending to separate them, this force being provided by four sets 14 of spring washers threaded on shafts 15 on the stirrups. The matrix is rotated by a ring gear 21 which is coupled to the matrix through the tension members 12 by locking a peg 22a in a groove 23 of the stirrup 12a. The ring gear 21 has two outwardly diverging flanges (27, 28, Fig. 9) which form a track for a number of circumferentially spaced rollers 29, 30, 31 one of which is fixed on to a drive shaft 32 and is provided with teeth which engage the teeth of the ring gear 21. The drive mechanism is cooled by means of a forced flow of atmospheric air, see arrows 41, Fig. 2.
