Abstract

905,109. Thermal regenerators. ENTWICKLUNGSBAU PIRNA VEB. Oct. 9, 1958, No. 32188/58. Class 64 (1). In a thermal regenerator having an annular drum matrix 17 extending between header members 25, 26 formed for the supply and discharge of the heat-exchanging fluids passing through the matrix, and movable with respect to the drum, the header members are longitudinally displaceable and tiltable with respect to the drum and are arranged to form flat sealing surfaces therewith. In the rotary matrix regenerator shown, the drum 17 is formed with integral axial extensions 21, 22 on which the surfaces are formed. On the ends of the header members 25, 26 are mounted graphite-coated sealing rings 31 urged by springs 32 towards the sealing surfaces on the matrix drum extensions 21, 22. These extensions contain portions which may form continuations of radial partitions provided in the matrix 17, or may consist of curved steel plates. The header members 25, 26 are resiliently mounted. They are biased axially towards the matrix by resilient mountings 27, 28, and are permitted slight radial movement by resilient mountings 29, 30. The rotor rotates on rollers 60, 61 mounted in the stationary easing 57 and is carried in a ring member 45 having teeth meshing with a drive pinion 66. Thermal expansion of the rotor is permitted by members 46 whereby the rotor is supported in the ring 45. The heat transfer material is preferably disposed in cells in the drum and may comprise tubes or alternate flat and corrugated plates of corrosion and heatresistant steel, or ceramic elements (Fig. 7) arranged in wire mesh cages, and possibly having a thin coating of a metal such as copper or silver. The use of ceramic materials for the headers and matrix casing is mentioned.
