Abstract

634,627. Regenerators. RICARDO, H. R., and ALCOCK, J. F. March 24, 1948, No. 8609. [Class 64(i)] In a regenerator of either the rotary matrix or rotary duct type, a seal is provided between the relatively rotating parts comprising a sealing member carried by one part and engaging the other part with a rubbing contact, the surface of the sealing member or the surface on which it engages being formed of a structurally continuous metal matrix solid at the working temperature and having therein pores or cavities containing a metal which is fusible at or near the working temperature. The sealing member may comprise a strip resiliently mounted in a grooved member rigid with the wall of a gas passage and pressed into engagement with the matrix face. In the form shown, an annular rotating matrix C is mounted within a gas duct A within which is incorporated a duct B for a second and hotter gas. Radial seals D and a circumferential seal E are provided at the ends of the duct B lying adjacent to the matrix face. The radial seals D each comprise a housing F bolted to the wall of the duct Band incorporating a block F<SP>2</SP> formed with two grooves. F', F<SP>4</SP> in the face lying opposite the matrix C. A sealing strip G formed from a composite material comprising a copper matrix containing lead or like metal fusible at a relatively low temperature embodied in its pores, is resiliently mounted in the groove F<SP>4</SP>, and a strip H composed of graphite or like solid lubricant is similarly mounted in the groove F<SP>3</SP>. The circumferential seal E comprises an arcuate housing secured to the wall of the duct B and containing a block in which is resiliently mounted an arcuate sealing strip of similar material to the strip G. The width of the sealing strips is such that no cell or passage in the matrix is simultaneously open to both the gas ducts A and B. The sealing strips may be split into abutting sections.
