Class 120(2) A device for smoothing irregularities in yarn or the like textile material comprises a guide bar, adapted to form with an adjacent member, a slot through which the yarn or the like passes, the guide bar having a yarn engaging face and grooving in the face, the grooving extending transversely of the direction of axial movement of the yarn or the like through the slot and forming with the face, yarn cleaning and slub catching edges. In the arrangement shown a guide bar 1 is mounted on the top face of the breast plate 2 of a winding machine so as to form therewith a transverse slot 3 for the yarn which is traversed laterally over the plate 2. One end of the bar is secured to the breast plate 2 by screws 5 and the other end is freely supported on the breast plate by a set screw 6. The slot forming face of the bar 1 is roughened by two Longitudinal series of shallow grooves 8, 9 extending the full width of the bar 1, the series extending oppositely from the centre of the bar and being oppositely indined in relation to the central transverse plane so that during traversing movement of the yarn the grooves 8 or 9 adjacent to the yarn extend transversely of the yarn axis.
