Abstract

559,927. Winding yarn. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. Oct. 17, 1942, No. 14573. [Class 120 (ii)] In a machine for winding yarn into cross-wound packages or cheeses and in which the yarn is traversed by a roller having two separate oppositely directed helical grooves in its surface each extending from near the centre line towards one end of the roller, the yarn is caused to return from one end of the roller towards the centre by the pull of a moving guide eye or member which also gives a small lateral displacement to the yarn first towards one side and then towards the other side of the centre line, the displacement being sufficient to cause the yarn to enter the groove leading to the opposite end of the roller. As shown the yarn from the supply bobbins o passes through a fixed guide b and under a pin d to the surface of the moving guide member e which, takes the form of a roller having a single deep helical groove e<SP>1</SP> in its surface, and from the roller e to the traverse roller f having two oppositely directed helical grooves o, p each terminating at the end of the roller in a short reversely directed end q and near the centre of the roller being formed with a splayed end v for picking up the yarn easily. The moving guide roller e is geared to the traverse roller so that it imparts the maximum throw to the yarn towards one side just when the yarn is required to enter the groove in the roller f for traversing towards that side or end of the roller. A reciprocating guide eye on an arm or guide bar actuated by a cam or equivalent mechanism may be used instead of a roller. Specifications 339,679, [Class 120 (ii)], and 529,150 are referred to.
