[Class 120 (ii)] The traverse bar of a machine for winding flax &c. into cross-wound roll form, is actuated by cam mechanism which is adapted to effect the reversals of the traverse bar comparatively gradually while towards the ends of the traverse tye yarn is displaced by additional means which maintain the same traversing speed and give substantially sharp reversals of the traverse of the yarn at each end of the roll. As shown the traverse bar 23 is actuated by a cam 24 with the parts 27 of the cam groove formed to a smooth curve of large radius to give a gradual reversal of the bar without shock, the yarn from the guide eye 22 of the bar passing over the surface of a roller 29 to the roll 30 which is driven by the roller. The roller 29 has V-shaped grooves 37 near its ends and just when the bar 23 beings to slow down, the grooves pick up the yarn and complete its traverse to the ends of the roll at the same traversing speed as that given by the parts 26 of the cam groove and back again until the bar 23 has got to its maximum speed again and resumes control of the yam traverse. The roller 29 may be driven from the shaft 25 of the cam 24 and the grooves 37 may be provided in a roller separate from the roller 29 but geared thereto ; the grooves in the roller 29 may be replaced by shoulders thereon. In another form the traverse of the yarn at the ends of the roll is effected by notched levers oscillated by cams on a shaft geared to the shaft of the roller driving the roll.
