Abstract

563,614. Winding yarns. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. May 10, 1943, Nos. 4669/44 and 4670/44. Divided out of 563,613. [Class 120 (ii)] A yarn winding machine has a traversing roller with two oppositely directed helical grooves extending from an intermediate position in the roller with their starting ends overlapping, the yarn being pulled and traversed from the ends towards the intermediate position by a guide eye positioned in front of the roller in a plane between the overlapping starting ends of the groove. As shown, the guide eye 24 is carried by a stem 22 adjustable vertically on a bracket 23 which is adjustable laterally on the frame 18 of the machine ; the grooves 34, 35 have short return ends 36 ; the pitch of the grooves may decrease towards the end of the roller so as to compensate for the wide initial pitch given to the return traverse under the pull from the eye 24. When winding tapered packages, the grooves are made of unequal length with the overlapping starting ends nearer the larger end of the package and the pitch of the grooves may increase towards the smaller end of the package so as to ensure uniformity in the distribution of the yarn in the package.
