Abstract

717,907. Yarn clearers. DOLL, J. Dec. 13, 1950 [Dec. 19, 1949], No. 30487/50. Class 120(2) A yarn clearer for textile apparatus comprises thread guides to determine the normal path of the yarn, selecting means obliquely arranged across the said path and providing a slot of increasing width and open at both ends, for the passage of the yarn, the said selecting means being adapted to cause a lateral displacement of the yarn on one side of its normal path whenever a knot or slub on the yarn encounters the said selecting means, and stopping means arranged at a predetermined distance beyond the said selecting means in the direction of feed of the yarn, the said stopping means being laterally offset with respect to the normal path of the yarn in the direction in which the yarn may be displaced by the selecting means and providing a slot of a predetermined constant width and opened at least at the end thereof adjacent to the normal path of the yarn, and wherein the yarn engages when it is laterally displaced by the selecting means, the stopping means and its slot extending beyond the end of the slot provided by the selecting means, in a direction away from the end adjacent the normal path of the yarn. As shown the normal path of the yarn is defined by the guides 2, 2, the selecting means consists of a slot between a vertically adjustable plate 9 and an obliquely arranged blade 15, and the stopping means of a slot between the plate 9 and the stop blade 20 carried by arms 28 mounted on spindle 21. The blade elements are carried in a cage 17 which is hingedly attached to the base plate 12 and held in the operative position by the spring 26. In operation when a slub or knot is encountered by the selecting blade 15 it runs along the blade, drawing the yarn away from its normal path and under the stop blade 20. The selecting slot diverges slightly so that the slub or knot eventually passes through the slot and whether or not the slub or knot is then caught by the stop blade depends on its length. Thus slubs or knots of a predetermined apparent surface area (i.e. length times diameter) are prevented from passing on, whilst slub or knots having less than this predetermined area are allowed to pass.
