SNUBBING DEVICE FOR YARN-WINDIN G MACHINES.
Application filed January 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD F. GLAZIEI: and HENRY S. BROMLEY, citizens of the United States, residing in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, have invented a- Snubbing Device for Yarn-\Vindmg Machines. of
which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to yarn winding machines, the main object of the invention being to provide a device for automatically snubbing or breaking the strands of yarn when the spools become full or when a predetermined amount of the yarn has been wound thereon.
A further object is to provide the said device with adjustable means whereby the amount of yarn received by the spools before the snubbing occurs may be accurately regulated.
in the attached drawings:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a portion of a yarn winding machine equipped with our device;
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the portion of the winding machine shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the snubbing device;
Fig. 4, is a plan View of the device, and Fig. 5, is a section taken on the line 55, Fig. 3.
In yarn winding machines, at the present time, considerable losses of yarn are experi enced due to the inability of the operator to attend with precision to all of the considerable number of spools under his or her supervision, there being unavoidably, unless the number of operators is increased beyond reason, an occasional overwinding of one or other of the said spools before the operator can move to break the strand being wound thereon. The excess yarn upon the overwound spools must be removed, and very often after removal is found Worthless for future use. At best, a considerable loss of time is unavoidable.
lVe have invented a device for automatically snubbing the yarn leads to the various spools when a predetermined amount of the yarn has been wound thereon, whereby the above described losses are eliminated and the number of attendants required for a given number of spools substantially reduced.
With reference to the drawings, 1 desig- Serial No. 440,377.
nates a portion of a win-ding frame, in suitable bearings on which is mounted a shaft 2 which carries a smooth-faced driving wheel 3, said shaft 2 receiving a rotary motion from some suitable external source of power. Carried in a suitable carrier 4 and adapted normally to lie with itsface in frictional engagement with the face of the wheel 3, is a spool 5, upon which the yarn taken in the present instance from the yarn cone 7 is to be wound, the said yarn, indicated by the reference numeral 6, extending to the said spool from the said cone 7 over a guide roller 8 carried upon the arms 9 extending from the frame 1. The spool carriers/t comprise two parallel upwardly extending arms 1 joined together at their base by a lateral rod 10, which is established within hook bearings upon the said frame 1, and a downwardly and rearwardly extending weight arm 4' at one side thereof upon which is a suitable weight 11. The said weight tends to carr the arms 4, in which are suitable slottet bearings 12 for the trunnions 5 of the spool 5, toward the wheel 3 whereby the face of the said spool is held against the face of the wheel.
Carried by a reeiprocatory bar 13 in bearings 14 upon the said frame 1, is a yarn gulde 15, said yarn guide having in the present instance a vertically disposed slot through which the yarn passes, the said guide reciprocating in front of the spool 5 and carrying the yarn from side to side thereof it is wound, causing an even distribution of the yarn upon the spool.
From the above description, the operation of the machine will be apparent. The wheel 3 revolves the spool, 5 by frictional engagement whereby the yarn is drawn from the cone 7 onto the roller 5, the yarn guide 15 reciprocating as described to distribute the yarn over the spool. As the spool becomes full, the arms 4? are forced backwardly from the wheel 3. The initial position of the spool is shown bv the dot and dash lines in Fig. 1, the initial corresponding position of that portion of the yarn 6 which extends between the guide 15 and the spool being also indicated in dot and dash lines.
Mounted so as to lie intermediate of the yarn guide 15 and the spool 5 is the snubbing device which forms the subject matter of this invention, the device consisting in the present instance of a suitable support 16 secured to the frame 1 by means of a bolt 17 which extends through one of a number of apertures 18 formed in the said support. Carried at the top of the support 16 is a snubbing head 19 having a lateral extension 19' at the top thereof which is disposed parallel to the face of the spool This extension 19' has in the present instance a triangular recess 20 extending backwardly from the end edge thereof, the said recess being such that a sharp point 21 is formed at the lower forward end of thesaid extension. A fiat spring suitably secured to that face of the snubbing head 19 which lies away from the said spool is established so as to cover sulr stantially the-entirerecess 20, with the exce tion eta smallportion 23 of the area thcreoi? l' ing directly over the said point 21. he clearly illustrated Figs. 3 and 5, the said spring 22 lies substantially flush against the face of the extension 19, the lower edge 2 oi the s]f1ring in the present instance lying along the beveled inclined edge 26 of the recess 20. The snubbing head is so positioned that the extension 19 projects over the lateral path of the yarn as it travels from side to side with the yarn guide 15, so that even tually, when the spool becomes full and the yarn has been automatically elevated into the position shownin full lines in Fig. 1, the said yarn will be carried into the niche 28 above the point 21 and up the inclined edge 26 until it meets the edge of thespring .2, which under the frictional action of the yarn against the edge "thereof is pulled tightly against-the edge 26, so that the yarn is pinched between the said edge 26 and the spring and is snubbed or ruptured by the continued rotation of the spool 5.
The head 19 is preferably slidable vertically upon the support 16, the said head in the present instance being held in a recess formed by the turned-over portion 16 of the said support, and a spring 27 suitably secured to the support is adapted to bear against the rear edge of the said headto retain it in a given position, the said rear edge of the head being notched as indicated at 28,
Fio. 3, for the reception 01" the end of the i spring. An ad ustment vertically of the said head 19 in the support is thus provided for. A further adjustment of the device is provided for by means ot-the vertically aranged series oi holes 18 through which the securing bolt 17 extends.
The device with slight modification may be applied to any winding machine.
We claim: 1. In a yarn winding machine, the combination of a spool, means for revolving said spool to cause a strand of yarn to be wound thereon, a reciprocatory yarn guide adapted to carry the yarn back and forth across the face or said spool to effect a desired distribution thereon, and. a ,deviceestablished in the pat-hot and actuated by the yarn as it travels with the yarn guide for grippingthe said yarn when a specified quantity thereoi has been wound upon the spool, whereby the continued rotation of the spool effects snubhing of the yarn.
2. in ayarn winding machine, the combination of a spool, means for revolving said spool to cause a strand of yarn to be wound thereon, a device comprising a relatively immovable member and a movable element actuated by frictional engagement with the yarn and adapted to clamp the yarn against the said immovable member, and means for guiding the yarn into engagement with said movable element when a predetermined quantity or the yarn has been wound upon the said spool.
lin a yarn winding machine, the combination of a spool, means for revolving said spool to 'eiiect the winding thereon of a strand of yarn, a device comprising a relatively immovable member and a spring actuable by frictional engagement with the yarn for clamping the yarn against said immovable member, and means for guiding the yarn into engagement with said movable element when a predetermined quantity of the yarn has been wound upon the said spool.
