Class 120(2) A thread traverse device for winding machines comprises a drum body consisting of two cylindrical drum parts 10, 11 and a core 12 disposed between the drum parts 10, 11, the drum parts being axially displacable in relation to one another during winding to vary the width of the gap 34 between opposing peripheral edges 28, 29 of the drum parts 10, 11. The core part 12 has an elliptical surface 33 and a boss 32 adapted to be mounted on a common shaft with bosses 30, 31 of the parts 10, 11. When the parts 10, 11 are moved apart during winding the distance between the reversal points of the yarn on the package is decreased, producing conical-ended packages-
