To reduce the tension of a thread 1, Fig. 1, as closely as possible to zero as it is wound on to a package 6, the thread is first traversed by a device 3, is then fed on to an intermediate roll 4 having a frictional surface that prevents variations in the thread tension on the input side of the intermediate roll from being transmitted to the output side of said roll, and is finally fed on to a yarn package driving roll 5, the driving roll 5 being spaced from the intermediate roll 4 and having a peripheral speed that is less than that of the intermediate roll 4 to allow the thread to shrink between the two rolls and so assume substantially its unstressed state. In Fig. 1 the traversing mechanism 3 is a reciprocating arrangement whilst in Fig. 2 it is a slotted drum 13. In Fig. 2, 14 is the intermediate roll,15 is the driving roll, and 16 is the package. The frictional surface on the intermediate roll may be of synthetic rubber.
