Abstract
811,237. Valves. PEACOCK BROS. Ltd. Aug. 14, 1956 [March 7, 1956], No. 24788/56. Class 135. A check valve for closing promptly to prevent reverse flow and suitable for use in oil pipe lines comprises a valve body 10, Fig. 2, with a valve seat 16 inclined at an angle of about 50 degrees to the axis of inlet and outlet ports 11, 12 respectively and engaged by a closure member 22 mounted on an arm 27 which is pivoted at 26 and connected to spring biasing means 36 so arranged as to cause a reduction of biasing force as the valve opens. The valve member 22 is connected to the arm 27 by a pin 29 and an adjustment screw 31. The seat 16 is mounted in the body by studs 17 and carries a bracket 25 on which the arm 27 is pivoted. The biasing means in the embodiments shown consists of a pair of tension springs 36 so arranged in relation to the arm 27 that as the valve member approaches the fully open position 48 the angle between the line of action of the springs and a line joining points 26, 38 decreases but never becomes negative so that the valve member is subject to a diminishing biasing force. The valve member 22 when fully open against a stop 47 lies clear of the passage through the valve body. The assembly of valve member and seat may be withdrawn through the top of the valve body after removal of a cover 44. In a modification, the biasing means consists of a bow spring mounted between a fixed abutment near the pivot point of the arm 27 and a point on an extension of the arm 27 beyond the centre of the valve member 22 whilst in a further modification the valve member is biased by a cantilever spring fixed to a bracket in the upper part of the valve body and bearing at its free end against a roller carried by the arm 27 near its pivot point. Fig. 9 illustrates a further embodiment in which the valve seat 110 is held in the valve body by a bell-shaped clamping member 118 which carries the valve member 122 connected through its arm 121 with the biasing springs 125 and is held in the valve body by means of an adjustable screw 131 in the cover 116. This embodiment, and also that embodying the cantilever spring, has an extension on the valve member which enters the bore of the valve seat and substantially eliminates chattering of the valve.
