Abstract

779,612. Valves. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Nov. 23, 1955 [Dec. 3, 1954], No. 35107/54. Class 135. In a fluid metering. device comprising a stem 6, Fig. 1, having an external helical groove, the stem being axially movable in a sleeve 7 integral with the body 3 of the device, the lower end of the stem is provided with a valve closuremember 5 co-operating with a valve seat 4 at the inlet port, the member 5 being urged towards the fully closed position by a spring 11, which valve can only move to this position after the stem 6 has been moved into the position giving minimum flow. A constant-level fuelchamber 1 is connected by an inlet pipe 2 to the base of the body 3 from which point flow to an outlet pipe 8 and burner 9 is controlled by the closure member 5. A spindle 10 upstanding from the stem 6 can have an operating member attached thereto whilst the spring 11 around the spindle is confined between the upper end of the stem 6 and an extension 13 of a bush 14 coaxially disposed in the upper portion 15 of the body 3 and retained in position by a spring clip 16 in opposed slots 17 in the portion 15, which clip is readily removed to facilitate cleaning of the valve assembly. A collar 20, Fig. 2, is adjustably located on a threaded part of the spindle 10 and locked thereon by a pin 21 which engages a cam track 22, Fig. 1, on the upper part of the body portion 15 and is kept in contact therewith by the spring 11 so that the stem is moved axially as the spindle is rotated in one or other direction, whereby more or less of the helical groove is inserted between the inlet and outlet ports. The cam track is cut away 23 so that beyond the minimum flow position the spring 11 forces the closure 5 on to its seat. In a modification, the spring abuts the extension 13a, Fig. 2, of a sleeve 18 outside the body portion 15 and fastened thereto by a set-screw 19, and the cam track 22 is part of the latter. Specifications 518,610 and 660,461 are referred to.
