Abstract
839,761. Valves. LEVEY, L. W. Aug. 20, 1956 [Aug. 30, 1955; Sept. 26, 1955], Nos. 24821/55 and 27340/55. Class 135. A liquid regulating device where control is effected by altering the length of restricted passageway around a plug member through which the liquid flows, comprises a substantially cylindrical valve housing 23 fitted with an inlet pipe 21 communicating with an axial bore 31 and an outlet pipe 22 leading from a longitudinal channel 35 in the valve chamber 32. The valve plug 42 has a neck 44, that seats on a gasket 38, a helical groove 43 and a tubular valve stem 48 which is secured in an axial passageway in the valve plug and passes through an axial opening in a screwed retaining plug 33. A control knob with an axial bore is fixed to the outer end of the stem and a radial pin 51 on the stem 48 is maintained in contact with a cam path 41 on top of the valve body by a spring 47 acting on the valve plug 42. Rotation of the stem is limited by studs 39, 40. In the closed position the pin 51 is adjacent stud 39 at the lowest part of the cam path and the neck 44 is spring-urged against the gasket 38 to form a positive closure; on opening the valve by anti-clockwise rotation of the control knob the pin 51 acting on the cam path 41 causes the plug to lift from its seat and allows liquid to flow from the inlet through groove 43 to the channel 35 and the outlet 22, the rate of flow being determined by the effective length of groove 43 through which liquid must flow. In the fully open position the bore 31 communicates directly with the outlet 22 because of an enlarged portion 52 of the groove 43. The lower end of the bore 31 acts as a dirt trap and is closed by a removable cap. In another embodiment the cam path 41 and the neck 44 are dispensed with and the bore 31 communicates with the groove 43 by a hole or groove in the base of the plug. The plug seats permanently on the gasket 38 and the channel 35 ends below the top of the plug.
