An emergency sealing device for sealing an aperture, such as an outlet in an atomic reactor, comprises a drop flap 1 having a substantially spherically faced rim 3 adapted sealingly to seat against a sealing ring 30 fixed around the aperture, flap support means, e.g. parallel arms 4, 5 mounted on a horizontal spindle 8, adapted to be pivotally mounted with respect to a support structure 11, and so coupled to the flap as to permit limited pivotal displacement of the flap with respect to the support means about a point located substantially at the spherical centre of the rim 1, means for releasably retaining the flap out of engagement with the ring, and means for retaining the flap in sealing engagement with the ring after the flap has been released so as to drop into said sealing engagement. As shown the arms 4, 5 are integral with a sleeve 6 surrounding a spindle 12 secured to the flap and housing a spring 16 disposed between a collar 13 secured to the sleeve and a collar 19 secured to the spindle, the collar 13 having a conical inner surface engaged by a spherically faced bearing 14 screwed on to the spindle; the collar 19 carries a resilient ring 20. The ring 30 is in two parts 30a, 30b clamped together by bolts 33 and retaining a sealing ring 32. The retaining device 21 includes a spring-loaded bar 23 which, when the flap has dropped, is turned through an angle of 90 degrees by contact of the arm 7 with the trip bar 27. A lever 34 secured to the spindle 8 is coupled to a shock-absorbing mechanism. The flap is held in a horizontal non-operative position by solenoid-operated lazy tongs which grip a pin secured to the flap. In a modification, the flap is attached to a curved arm the hinge spindle of which has secured thereto a lever supporting a drop weight comprising a sealed cylindrical container in which is disposed a weight formed with a central bore and supported within the container by a spring; when the flap is released, the drop weight falls and as the flap hits the seat thereof continues a downward movement against the effect of the spring, oil passing up the bore to displace a ball valve, and when the weight comes to rest the weight is returned to the initial position by the spring at a slow rate determined by the rate of return flow of oil around the sides of the weight. The lower end of the arm extends through a sleeve and is connected to the latter in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 3, but the spring 16 is replaced by an annular, rubber plug.
