892,950. Valves. BAKER OIL TOOLS Inc. May 20, 1959, No. 17144/59. Class 135. [Also in Group XXI] A drill pipe float check valve comprises a tubular valve body 12, Fig. 1, consisting of two parts 16, 18 joined together by diametrically opposite legs 20 and sealingly clamped in a drill pipe section B between a shoulder 11 in the pipe and a screw-threaded drill bit pipe C. A resilient valve seat element 30 standing proud of the valve seat 29 is protected from mud passing downwardly through the pipe by a retainer sleeve 33. The valve plate 36 is hingedly mounted on the body by means of bifurcated arms 42 and ears 43 through which pass a pivot pin 44 covered with a substantial thickness of pliant elastic material to permit limited freedom of movement of the valve plate to adjust itself to the valve seat when the valve is closed by a coil spring 48. A rubber or similar bumper 70 on the rear of the plate engages the pipe bore when the valve is open and absorbs vibrations of the drill bit to prevent damage to the valve parts. Vibrations of the drill bit are also absorbed by an elastic ring 80 clamped between the valve body part 18 and the drill bit pipe C.
