Abstract
809,960. Pneumatic conveyers. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. Jan. 19, 1956 [Jan. 20, 1955], No. 1901/56. Class 78 (1). A portable device for introducing finelydivided material, e.g. iron powder or iron aluminium powder into the reaction zone of a cutting oxygen stream or calcium carbide beneath the surface of molten metal, comprises a gas-tight hopper H, Fig. 1, to the upper part of which air is admitted through a pipe 21 and an inductor assembly P to which air is supplied through a pipe 40 at a pressure less than the pressure of the air supplied to the hopper. A hollow anti-bridging dome 59 is mounted in the bottom part of the hopper and extends into a chamber 48, Fig. 4, forming the upper part of the assembly P. Stainless steel pipes 47 extend across the chamber 48 and are connected by pipes 45, 42, 43 to the pipe 40 and by passages 55 to pipes 66 leading to the point of use of the material. Material passes from the hopper into the dome through holes 64 and is sucked into the pipes 47 through apertures 49. Each aperture is surrounded by a shield 52 of stainless steel. The pressure of air in the hopper is controlled by the regulator 28 and throttle valves 44 on the branches 42, 43 are set to provide the desired pressure differential between the hopper and the inductor pipes 47. A removable brass screen 13 mounted in the upper part of the hopper allows only comminuted material to pass during charging and, at other times, serves as a holder for desiccating material 15.
