Abstract
542,347. Alloys. MEEHANITE METAL CORPORATION. April 16. 1941, No. 4968. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1940. [Class 82 (i)] Powdered or granulated alloying material, for example, ferro-silicon, calcium - silicon, nickel, or chromium, is added to molten meltal, for example, by forming a vortex of the molten metal and dropping the material on to the surface of the metal at the vortex. The mixed materials may be collected in a receptacle at such a distance below the vortex as to ensure considerable turbulence. In the apparatus shown metal passes from a cupola 10 down a spout 11 opening tangentially into a bowl 14 in which a vortex is formed. Powdered material from a hopper 26 is fed, under control of a slide valve operated by a handle 31, through an adujstable shoot 23 and spout 33 and is delivered to the metal at a point directly above or adjacent to the vortex.
