Abstract

A minor proportion of a granular detergent composition consists of coloured granules uniformly distributed throughout the composition, the colouring of the coloured granules being vivid so as to be sharply contrasted with the background coloration of the remaining bulk of the granules. The coloured granules suitably constitute 2-30 per cent of the composition, are generally 0.2-1.5 mm. in their largest dimension, and may comprise granules of more than one colour. As shown, an apparatus suitable for the production of such compositions comprises an air lift 3 into which the uncoloured detergent composition is fed by conveyer 1. Particles <PICT:0808668/III/1> which are too small are not transferred by gravity separator 4 to conduit 6 but pass out through 5, while lumps which are too large fall into container 2. The particles of the required size pass over vibrating screen 7 and thence to conduit 10, where a proportion of the material is diverted by means of conduit 16. The remainder of the material passes from conduit 10a to conveyer 12 prior to packaging. The diverted material passes ultimately to rotating drum 18, where it is sprayed with colouring material supplied from source 19, before passing back to air lift 3, by means of conduit 23, where it is intimately mixed with the uncoloured material. If multi-coloured compositions are required, separate units as described may be used for each colour required, all the units having an air lift in common for mixing. The detergent compositions described comprise tallow soap, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sulphate, and silicate, miscellaneous solids, anticaking agents, sudsing control agents, and substantive fluorescent dyes. Suitable non-substantive dyes for colouring the compositions include Erioglaucine, Patent Blue A, Rhodamine B, Amaranth Red, Fast Crimson, Wool Violet, Azure Blue, and Lumogen Yellow, Blue, and Green.
