Abstract

562,856. Making soaps; soap powder. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. Aug. 29, 1942, No. 12210. Convention date, June 12, 1942. Addition to 555,034, [Group V]. [Class 91] Beta phase soap prepared by agitation of a mass of soap of appropriate composition within a temperature range as defined in the parent Specification is converted into soap flakes by forming the soap mass into ribbons and then reducing the moisture content while maintaining a temperature at which no substantial reversion of the beta phase to another phase takes place. The agitation operation may be combined with cooling and may be carried out within the narrower temperature range of which the upper limit is the highest temperature at which the soap will flow under gravity and the lower limit the temperature below which the soap loses its pasty consistency, e.g. from 160‹ F. to 115‹ F. The soap should contain at least 15 per cent of sodium soaps of saturated fatty acids containing from 16 to 22 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. soaps of tallow fatty acids. Soap builders may be added and the soap may be aerated. As shown in the drawing, melted soap containing about 20 per cent moisture at 224‹ F. is passed from a crutcher 46 into a cooling and agitating device 31, 42 constructed as described in the parent Specification. Compressed air may be introduced from a valve 22 and a soap builder such as sodium silicate may be supplied by a pump 54 and pipe 48. The mixture passes through pipe 49 and nipples 62 to a feed hopper 63 mounted above a revolving chilling roll 60 and a hot feed roll 64. The soft pasty soap forms a film on the roller and after passing partly round the roller is scored by wires 65 to form ribbons usually from “ to 1 inch wide which are removed by a doctor knife 66. and fall on to a belt conveyer 68 which conveys them to a flake drier 61. Here the ribbons pass through currents of dry heated air such that the temperature never exceeds 160‹ F. and the dried ribbons, finally containing about 10 per cent of moisture and at a temperature of 110 to 115‹ F., break into flakes and are discharged by a convever 69. U.S.A. Specifications 1,583,484, 1,783,864, 2,024,425 and 2,203,980 are referred to.
