Abstract

Animal feeds and feed supplements, suitable for bagging and for ready mixing with other feed ingredients, are made from masses of unstoned agglomerated dates, e.g., the palm-leaf packages thereof, by breaking up the masses and, at the same time, mixing in sufficient ground cereal, e.g., barley meal passing a 1/8 in. screen, to coat the date pieces, and then drying the mixture without decomposing it. The drying may be effected in a tunnel drier at not above 300 DEG F. by hot air or furnace gas until the product is hard and friable. The breaking up and mixing may be continued until the mixture is a paste, and the paste extruded into the drier, the stones being removed before or during the extrusion. Stones may be removed after the drying. The dried product may be ground; dried stones may be ground separately and mixed with the ground date product. Dried products may be made into a stiff dough with water, the dough moulded to blocks or extruded to rods or threads, and the blocks, rods or threads again dried. Tendency of the products to bind on absorbing moisture from the air may be offset by coating with kieselguhr or the like.
