808,149. Sheathed heating resistors. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Aug. 7, 1957 [Aug. 8, 1956], No. 24342/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXVI] The mineral insulation of a sheathed heating resistor is rendered water-repellent by impregnation with a silicon oil or grease which may amount to up to 5 per cent by weight of the insulation and may comprise a methyl siloxane polymer or a phenyl methyl siloxane. The oil or grease may be applied to the inner surface of the sheath before the introduction of the insulation, or may be introduced into the insulation prior to or during the introduction of the latter into the sheath, the assembly being subsequently drawn down and annealed. For example, the oil or liquified grease may be sprayed on to the insulation as it leaves a drying furnace, or it may be sprayed or dipped into the cable sheath as the mineral insulation is fed in. Alternatively, the insulation in the form of a paste may be extruder about a conductor, the oil or liquified grease either being fed into the extruder or milled with the insulation before the latter is fed into the extruder.
