Abstract

804,569. Fuel injection pumps. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. March 12, 1957 [April 20, 1956], No. 8180/57. Class 102(1). A fuel injection pump comprises two superposed coaxial drum like housings the one containing the pump cylinder disposed parallel to one another and the other containing the operating means for the plungers. The plungers are formed as two parts, an inner plunger part 14 and an outer plunger part 13, both being urged in a downward direction by springs 32 and 34. The part 13 has a reduced portion 23 which passes through a hole in an adjustable plate 19 which limits the non delivery stroke of the plunger part 13 by engaging the shoulder 26. In operation fuel from chamber 17 passes through ports 18 of the part 13 until the inner plunger part 14 is moved upwards to close the ports. The part 14 continues to move upwards setting up a small pressure until the tappet rod 28 engages the part 13 thus causing both plunger parts to move together to inject the fuel. The amount of fuel pumped can be varied by adjusting the plate A through a cam 20. The cylinders may be arranged in a circle and be driven by an axially acting cam 5.
