Abstract
Molten slag is converted into a dense solid material by cooling in a closed container of large surface area to volume and constructed so that only a small surface of slag is exposed to the air, thereby cooling and solidifying under conditions preventing the generation of gas within the slag. The solidified slag can be crushed to form aggregate. Slag is defined as any oxide system containing a mixture of oxides, such as lime, magnesia, alumina and silica, which are substantially stable at elevated temperatures, together with at least a small amount of oxygen carriers, such as metallic iron and/or manganese and/or ferrous and/or manganous and/or ferric and/or manganic compounds, and sulphur compounds such as sulphides.
