Abstract
Molten slag is subjected to external oxidizing conditions causing internal oxidation at a viscosity selected according to the required porosity. For a dense product the slag is maintained sufficiently fluid for such time that all the gas generated can escape; whilst for a porous product, the fluidity is lowered sufficiently to prevent gas generated escaping, the degree of porosity being dependent upon the fluidity, i.e., the amount of gas which is retained in the slag. The term "slag" is defined as being any oxide system containing a mixture of oxides, such as lime, magnesia, alumina and silica, which are stable at elevated temperatures, together with at least a small amount of oxygen carrier such as iron and/or manganese, and/or ferrous and/or manganous and/or ferric and/or manganic, and sulphur compounds such as sulphides. Examples include lavas and clays. Specification 344,309 is referred to.
