Abstract
977,784. Metallurgical converter linings. HARBISON - WALKER REFRACTORIES CO. July 23,1962 [Aug. 21, 1961], No. 28209/62. Heading F4B. The lining of a metallurgical converter comprises first zones 30 at locations subject to wear and thermal shock by the introduction of charge comprising bricks composed of tarbonded magnesite having an MgO content of at least 96%, and a second zone 26 subject to contact with slag splash comprising tarbonded refractory composed of at least 96% CaO plus MgO and less than 4% of SiO 2 A1 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 .The MgO content of the zone 26 ranges from 50 to 94% and may contain from 1 to 5% of Cr 2 O 3 .A third zone 24 of the lining covering the bottom of the converter and the sides below the metal level comprises dead burned dolomite, stabilized dolomite, dead burned lime, dead burned natural magnesite or mixtures thereof. Between the working lining and a metal shell 5 there is a lining 18 of burned magnesite covered with a tar-bonded ramming mix 20 of the same character. Compositions of typical refractories for the lining are described. The lining may also be applied to a rotor converter. Specifications 926,148 and 977,782 are referred to.
