Refractory brick for lining electric furnaces and oxygen blast converters is made by casting a melt containing CaO, MgO and calcium carbide, with the carbide content of the brick not exceeding 35 wt. per cent. The bricks can also contain magnesium carbide and suitably contain a total of at least 65% CaO and MgO, up to 4% Al 2 O 3 + SiO 2 and can be given a humidity proof coating of tar, oil or plastics.
