Description

1 1 REFRACTORY LINING FOR A BESSEMFR.,CONVERTER This invention relates to
a refractory lining for a Bessemer converter.
In the past, Bessemer converters wherein molten iron-is treated with pure magnesium have been lined with a refractory material to protect the metal, 'Casing. The refractory lining has been held in place, -by tamping the lining between the metal casing of the Bessemer converter and corresponding templates. Alternatively, the lining has been compacted by vibration. This system has several disadvantages: it is time-consuming. The refractory material must be dried and sintered after-tamping or compaction and must be preheated to a hi-Sh temperature before using in the Bessemer converter. A stand-by Bessemer converter must therefore be kept-ready and preheated, with the surface temperature of-the -refractory material remaining nevertheless relatively.low, in spite of an intensive mode of operation, and this results in deposits of-slag.
The present invention therefore seeks to overcome these described disadvantages and to provide an economical lining easily put into place for a converter, and preferably for a Bessemer converter.
According to one aspect of the inverytian there is provided a refractory lining for a converter, comprising a metallic casing and a lining comprising prefabr icated elements fitted into and forming an internal cover for said casing, said lining being made from a ceramic -composite material.
According to a further aspect of the-invention there is provided a refractory lining for a Bessemer converter, comprising a metallic casing, a layer of concrete atop said metallic casing, and a lining comprisingprefabricated elements atop said concrete layer, said lining being made from a ceramic composite material.
2199930 2 One embodiment of the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a Bessemer converter with a prefabricated, refractory lining; and, Figure 2 shows an enlarged detail of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, the metallic casing 4 of a Bessemer converter can for instance comprise several elements, including a forward element 1, a central element 2, and a bottom element 3. The elements 1, 2, and 3 are held together to form a unit by fastening means, for example, bolts (not shown) inserted into the flanges 12. Into these elements 1, 2, and 3 of the casing 4, corresponding prefabricated elements 5, 6, 7, made of highgrade refractory composite material are inserted and fitted together. This system eliminates the need for timeconsuming tamping by means of templates and makes it possible to replace quickly an element of the lining which is damaged during operation of the Bessemer converter.
The prefabricated elements 5, 6 and 7 are illustratively made from a ceramic refractory composite material 9 best seen in Figure 2. The ceramic refractory composite material 9 normally comprises a layer 9a which permits a high surface temperature, essentially equal to the temperature of the melting, and a second layer 9b which ensures good insulation. Preferably, the ceramic refractory material 9 is made from well known materials suitable for lining such converters, for example, from aluminium oxide or zirconium oxide materials. In this matter the slag deposits are reduced. Due to the fact that the ceramic composite material is pre-sintered, the preheating need only be of short duration while at the same time the drying and sintering steps are eliminated.
To assemble the ceramic composite material, relatively thin layers 9a and 9b are used, said layers being supported by the basic lining 10, made, for example, of refractory 1.
3 t.
concrete. Upon insertion of the prefabricated elements 5, 6, 7, the space between the ceramic composite material 9 and the basic lining 10 may be filled with another material 11, e.g., sand.
In a further variant. it is possible to fill the space between the inner, prefabricated layer 9a, made of highgrade, refractory material permitting a high surface temperature essentially equal to the temperature of- the meltingi and consisting for example of 3 segments, and the casing 4 with another insulating material, e.g., chamotte or fireclay bound with silicate of sodium.
While the invention has been described by reference t 0 specific examples, this was for purpose of illustration only and should not be construed to limit the scope of the invention.
