Abstract
A refractory lining for a Bessemer converter comprises prefabricated elements (5, 6, 7) made of a composite material which may include several layers, for example, layers 9a, 9b made from an aluminum oxide or zirconium oxide material. The lining is capable of being inserted into the metallic casing 4 of the Bessemer converter. In this manner the replacement of the lining of a Bessemer converter, which is necessary from time to time, is much simplified. Due to the short pre-heating time of the proposed lining, preheated standby Bessemer converters are no longer necessary. The converter may include a basic lining of refractory concrete 10, and a layer of sand 11, or the space between the lining layer 9a and the casing 4 may be filled with chamotte or fireclay bound with silicate of sodium which acts as an insulator.
