Abstract

Refractory objects comprising a backing and a facing are prepared by laying a slurry of a refractory material and superimposing a slurry of a different refractory material, both slurries containing a lower alkyl (not more than 4. C. atoms) silicate, water, a mutual solvent and a gelling accelerator, the proportion of water or accelerator in each slurry being so adjusted that the first laid slurry has the longer setting time, and when both slurries have set, firing. Preferred refractories for the facing are silicon carbide, zircon or a mixture of zirconia and alumina, whilst those for the backing are sillimanite, grog or other forms of aluminium silicate. Specified solvents are ethyl- and isopropyl alcohol, whilst various organic amines are given as the gelling accelerator. Objects may be faced on two sides by laying three slurries, and if required such objects can be cut along the plane parallel to the facings to give two single faced products.
