Abstract
942,468. Converter bottoms. OUGHTIBRIDGE SILICA FIREBRICK CO. Ltd., C. S. HEDLEY, D. F. McVITTIE, and W. C. GILPIN. June 23, 1961 [June 23, 1960], No. 22963/60. Heading F4B. A tuyere block for a basic Bessemer converter comprises a plurality of copper tuyere pipes, each of which is surrounded by a steel or iron sleeve, the spaces between the pipes and the sleeves and the spaces between the sleeves being filled with compacted refractory material. As shown, a perforated bottom plate 11 may be provided with an upwardly projecting steel plate structure in the form of square cells 13, some of the cells being provided with copper tuyere pipes 14. Preferably, each cell containing a tuyere pipe is surrounded by 8 cells without pipes. The spaces 13a between the pipes and the cell walls may be filled with deadburned magnesia and the other cells may be filled with tar-bonded, dead-burned, dolomite. The cross-section of the cells may be round, Fig. 4 (not shown), or hexagonal, Fig. 3 (not shown). The space between the pipe and the sleeve may be at least half an inch.
