Abstract

797,611. Electrolytic preparation of ketoximes. WILSON, C. L. Oct. 12, 1955 [Oct. 14, 1954], No. 29025/55. Class 41. Ketoximes are produced by cathodically reducing a solution of an inorganic nitrite or nitrate in the presence of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic ketone at pH 5 to 11. The temperature should be kept below 70‹ C. for satisfactory yields and typically is around 10‹ C. The solution should be agitated as by use of a cylindrical cathode rotated perpendicularly to its axis. The cathode is preferably of zinc although lead, magnesium, copper, nickel, or platinum may be used. In practice the solution contains 10- 20 per cent of the inorganic salt and if a diaphragm of unglazed porcelain is used to form a cathode compartment, the catholyte pH is maintained close to neutral by passing CO 2 through it or by adding buffers such as dipotassium hydrogen phosphate or sodium acetate, ethyl alcohol, and ethyl acetate. An alcoholic instead of an aqueous solution may be used, while other solvents suitable are dimethylformamide, dioxane, and ethylene glycol.
