Abstract

1421118 Preparation of aminophenols ALBRIGHT & WILSON 8 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 53169/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] A nitrosophenol is reduced to an aminophenol by electrolysis of an electrolyte solution which comprises the nitrosophenol. The solution forms the catholyte of a cell which is divided into separate anodic and cathodic compartments by means of a semi-permeable membrane which is impermeable to nitrosophenols and aminophenols. The membrane may be a cation exchange membrane. The term "nitrosophenol" embraces possible species in tautomeric equilibrium (e.g. p-nitrosophenol and quinone monoxime). The nitrosophenol may be o-, m-, or pnitrosophenol or 1-nitroso-2-naphthol or 3- hydroxy-6-nitrosotoluene. For example, in the examples indicated are described, I and II, chemical preparation of p-nitrosophenol; III to VI, electrolytic reduction of p-nitrosophenol to p-aminophenol with subsequent chemical acetylation to produce N-acetyl p-aminophenol; VII, chemical preparation of 3- hydroxy-6-nitrosotoluene; VIII, electrolytic reduction of 3-hydroxy-6-nitrosotoluene to 6- amino-3-hydroxytoluene; and IX, electrolytic reduction of 2-hydroxy-1-nitrosonaphthalene to 1-amino-2-naphthol.
