Abstract
617,879. Electrophoretic deposition of alumina on thermionic cathodes. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and JENKINS, R. O. Oct. 1, 1945, No. 25429. [Class 41] In the manufacture of thermionic cathodes, alumina is deposited upon the heater, e.g. a wire, by electrophoresis from a suspension of the oxide in a liquid comprising an aqueous electrolytic solution and a solution of a suitable binder which is subsequently removed from the deposit by heating. The oxide may be suspended in a nitrocellulose solution which contains substantial quantities of a diluent such as acetone or methyl alcohol to which is added a small quantity of the aqueous electrolytic solution such as sodium chloride in water for activating the particles of oxide by ion absorption. Small additions of other oxides, e.g. beryllia may be made to the alumina in suspension. The heater wire is passed axially through a cylindrical cathode made up of nickel wires.
