Abstract
802,639. Glass. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 8, 1957 [Feb. 9, 1956], No. 4095/56. Class 56. [Also in Group XL(a)] A glass comprising at least 98 per cent by weight P2O5, 55-65; BaO, 25-40; Al2O3, 1-4, and alkali metal oxide, 1-9 (the remainder if any being impurities), is used to coat either a uranium rod, or the inside of an aluminium can enclosing the rod, forming the fuel element of a nuclear reactor. The glass is powdered and suspended, e.g., in methylated spirits, from which it is deposited, by spraying or electro-phoresis, and then fired to such temperature as to form a non-porous enamel. Nickel nitrate may be added as an electrolyte to the methylated spirit suspension when using the electrophoretic technique. Alternatively nitrocellulose and butyl acetate may be used as the suspension medium.
