Abstract

1,213,799. Phototropic glass. CARL ZEISSSTIFTUNG, [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN.]. 22 Nov., 1967 [24 Dec., 1966], No. 36016/70. Divided out of 1,213,798. Heading ClM. A phototropic glass, of which the phototropic properties are determined by the presence of silver halide crystals and optionally metallic silver, contains (1) 14-2 to 45% B 2 O 3 ; (2) 29 to 73% lead oxide; (3) up to 15% alkaline earth metal oxide; (4) up to 8% alkali metal oxide; and (5) up to 23% ZrO 2 and/or Al 2 O 3 and/or ZnO, the balance, if any, consisting of one or more compatible constituents. The glass may also contain as stabilizer(s) up to 0.8% CuO and/or up to 0-05% Cr 2 O 3 , the percentages being by weight. The glass may be produced by a method disclosed in the parent Specification and one example is given.
