Abstract

1510310 Surface coated silicon nitride artefacts UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 14 Aug 1975 [21 Aug 1974] 36830/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division B2] Silicon nitride artefacts coated with a surface layer of an oxide, other than aluminium oxide, whose thermodynamic stability is substantially equal to or is greater than aluminium oxide, are prepared by either decomposing a compound decomposable to such an oxide on the surface of an artefact comprising silicon nitride, or by shaping into a green artefact a powdery mixture of silicon, a binder and an oxide of the stated thermodynamic stability, debonding to remove the binder, and fixing in a nitriding atmosphere to convert the silicon to silicon nitride. The oxide may be that of an element of Group IIa, IIIa, or IVa or of the lanthanides or actinides of the Periodic Table. BeO, MgO and BaO are preferred; others exemplified include CaO, CeO 2 , HfO 2 , La 2 O 3 , SrO, ThO 2 , TiO 2 , UO 2 , Y 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 . The oxide may be present in a proportion of 0À5 to 5% by weight of the nitride. The coated nitride is preferably prepared by immersing the artefact in an aqueous solution of a suitable nitrate, drying, and calcining at less than 1000‹C The coating protects the artefact from attack by molten aluminium and is most usefully applied to refractory containers of porous silicon nitride.
