Abstract

A metallic surface, e.g. of a silver mirror, is coated with copper by being contacted with a copper salt solution and a metal powder suspension, one or both of which contain phosphoric acids, and/or one or more organic hydroxy acids, e.g. citric, malic, and tartaric acids. The sulphate is used as the copper salt, and zinc and cadmium powder may be used in the suspension. Additions which may be made to the solution and/or the suspension are (i) an p alcohol, e.g. mannitol, (ii) a salt of the metal powder, e.g. cadmium sulphate in the case of cadmium, and (iii) a reducing agent, e.g. sodium hypophosphite. The suspension may also contain a dispersing agent, e.g. gelatine, agar-agar, or a cellulose ester or derivative such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
