The gloss on an aluminium surface is reduced by contacting the surface with a solution, at a temperature of at least 125‹ F., comprising(g. /1.) 25 to 200 of alkali metal hydroxide, 0À2 to 10 of zinc ion, and 1 to 100 of an alkali metal hydroxide soluble sequestering agent, e. g. Rochelle salt or sodium citrate or gluconate. The zinc ion may be the oxide, nitrate or acetate.
